How to Refill a Petrol Lighter Safely

A petrol lighter is simple to maintain when it is treated with care. The main things to remember are straightforward: use the correct lighter fluid, fill slowly, avoid excess fuel, and let the lighter settle before ignition.

This guide is written for petrol wick lighters such as The KNNOX Lighter. Do not use these instructions for butane, torch, electric, or pressurised gas lighters.

What you need

  • Lighter fluid made for petrol wick lighters
  • A clean cloth or paper towel
  • A steady, well-ventilated surface
  • Your lighter care tool, if your lighter requires one

Do not use butane, propane, alcohol, gasoline, or pressurised gas. Petrol wick lighters are designed for lighter fluid made specifically for that category.

Step 1: Work away from flame

Refill the lighter in a well-ventilated area, away from candles, stoves, cigarettes, sparks, or any open flame. Lighter fluid is highly flammable, and vapour can ignite more easily than people expect.

Step 2: Open the filling area

Open the lighter according to its care instructions. On many petrol lighters, the absorbent filling material sits inside the body. Add fluid slowly so it absorbs evenly.

Step 3: Add fluid slowly

Tilt the lighter fluid bottle and add a small amount at a time. Stop before the filling material looks flooded.

Step 4: Wipe away excess fluid

If any fluid reaches the outside of the lighter, wipe it completely with a clean cloth. Do not ignite while fuel is visible on the outside.

Step 5: Let the lighter settle

After filling, close the lighter and wait briefly before lighting. This gives excess vapour time to dissipate.

Troubleshooting

If the lighter does not ignite after filling, check the wick and flint. A charred wick or worn flint can make ignition inconsistent.

FAQ

Can I use butane in a petrol lighter?

No. Petrol wick lighters require lighter fluid made for that style of lighter.

Why is my lighter wet after filling?

It may be overfilled. Wipe away excess fluid, leave the lighter in a safe ventilated area, and use less fuel next time.

Does the KNNOX Lighter arrive filled?

No. For shipping safety, lighter fluid is not included.
