How to Replace a Lighter Wick and Flint

Replace the Wick

Over time, the wick in a petrol lighter becomes charred and less effective. Replacing it will restore a strong flame.

  1. Remove the lighter insert: Unscrew or slide out the insert from the lighter body.
  2. Extract the old wick: Use tweezers or pliers to gently pull the wick up through the chimney. Pull until clean wick appears then cut the charred portion and tuck the rest back down. If there isn’t much wick left, fully remove and discard.
  3. Insert a new wick: Feed a replacement wick through the chimney down into the cotton packing. Use a thin wire to guide it if necessary.
  4. Repack the cotton: If you removed the cotton packing, repack it around the new wick so it draws fuel evenly.
  5. Trim and reassemble: Trim the wick to about 2–3 mm above the chimney and reinsert the insert into the case.

Replace the Flint

If your lighter sparks weakly or not at all, the flint may be worn down. Replacing it is simple:

  1. Open the flint tube: Unscrew the flint spring at the base of the insert and carefully remove it.
  2. Remove the worn flint: Tap the insert gently to release any remaining pieces of old flint.
  3. Insert new flint: Drop a new flint into the tube with the rough end facing the wheel.
  4. Replace the spring: Carefully screw the spring back into place, ensuring it sits flush.
  5. Test the spark: Rotate the striker wheel a few times to ensure the flint sparks consistently.

Tips

  • Always work in a clean, well-lit area to avoid losing small parts.
  • Keep spare wicks and flints on hand so you can replace them when needed.
  • If the lighter still doesn’t perform well, check the cotton packing and refill with fresh lighter fuel.
